In this article, we have presented an overview of the different approaches for structural determination of biological specimens by EM. This compendium of strategies makes EM a powerful tool in structural biology, as it is able to derive structural information from specimens in the whole spectrum from the cellular to macromolecular domain. The integration of the information obtained by these different EM approaches with well-known light microscopy and high-resolution structural techniques, such as X-ray crystallography or NMR, is expected to provide a comprehensive multiscale description of the biological hierarchy. Therefore, EM plays a key role in structural biology, with unique potential to bridge the gap between cellular and molecular biology&lt;br /&gt;
