SBGrid (www.sbgrid.org) is a collaboration
established in 2000 to provide the structural biology community with support for research computing. Such collaborations have traditionally
been supported by public funding agencies
(Finholt, 2003). However, SBGrid is unique in that
its ongoing operations are funded exclusively by
its members. By sharing the costs of research
computing support across many research
groups, SBGrid achieves efficiencies through
economies of scale, the sharing of expertise and
cooperation to promote common goals.
